Alabama Department of Education
The Teacher Education section is tasked with implementing the standards adopted by the State Board of Education (SBE) for the preparation of well-prepared and effective teachers and instructional support personnel. Staff members work with educator preparation programs on the undergraduate and graduate-level at 27 Alabama public and private colleges and universities to assure continuous compliance with all standards in the Teacher Education Chapter of the Alabama Administrative Code. All programs are reviewed on a regular basis and continuously monitored. The section gathers and analyzes data from institutions for annual reports and on an as-needed basis. The section serves as the liaison with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and serves as a resource for the Alabama Association for Colleges of Teacher Education (ALACTE) and the Certification Officers and Personnel in Education (COPE) organization. The section also provides assistance to teachers seeking “highly qualified” status and verification of having earned a higher degree.
